Calamity

Calamity is an eight part sci-fi western live-action series set within the world established by the popular western anime RWBY. The Huntsman is a stand-alone focusing on events set 100 years before the anime begins.

This project is not affiliated with Rooster Teeth Productions. It was written after my time with the company as a screenwriting/showrunning exercise.

Calamity is simply an exercise to see how well I could personally tackle potential production issues when trying to adapt an existing Intellectual Property to a virtual production pipeline with live-action in mind. As such, I am leaving a lot of the story details out in order to not spur any unnecessary theories.


Project

Introduction:
Calamity draws its inspiration from western, gun-slinging films, high-fantasy elements, and found family dramas.

Calamity aims to bring a new audience into the world of Remnant with its grounded, brutal action, characters overcoming issues that parallel real-life, and discovering what lengths humans will go to protect the ones they love.

Challenges:
Calamity was created and written with five specific set of goals/limitations in mind.

  • Project needed to be live-action but reuse existing animation assets.

  • Project needed to target a new platform/audience.

  • Project must stand on it’s own and not impact existing IP.

  • Project is limited to small action sequences due to small motion capture space.

  • Project needed to highlight the capabilities of Unreal Engine.


Script

Written as an eight part series, The story was focused on a dark fantasy tone set during The Great War in the history of the show and follows a lone-wander type character called The Huntsman and their companion, Billie.

The story was set to emulate the tone and style seen in popular fantasy series such as The Witcher and The Mandalorian.
